How to become an Enrolled Agent!

To become an IRS Enrolled Agent (EA), you generally follow these steps:

1) Get a PTIN

You must obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) before moving forward.

2) Pass the Special Enrollment Examination (SEE)

· The SEE has 3 parts: Part 1 (Individuals), Part 2 (Businesses), Part 3 (Representation, Practices & Procedures).

· Each part has 100 multiple-choice questions and is timed at 3.5 hours.

· The exam is offered during a testing window (generally May through February), and you may take parts in any order.

· You must pass all three parts within a 3-year period to apply for enrollment.

3) Apply for enrollment (Form 23) and pay the fee

After you pass all 3 parts, submit Form 23 (Application for Enrollment to Practice Before the IRS)—usually through Pay.gov—and pay the $140 fee.

4) Pass the IRS “suitability check”

The IRS runs a tax compliance and background check (filing/payment compliance + criminal background).

5) Maintain your EA status (after you’re enrolled)

Once enrolled, you’ll need to follow Circular 230 standards and meet ongoing requirements to keep your credential active.
